I've read abt half of outliers. It's amazing how the sayings "being at the right place, at the right time"'if you feed(euphemism?)your neighbor's child, your own child would grow well too" are not just cliches but actually true. Gladwell is truely onto somethig here. His take on schoolkids b'dates makes alot of sense, but given the current problems of lack of space, salary cuts and the almost colossal overhaul of the edu sys that would be needed, how is it possible to accomodate kids acc to their monthof births?
* To me its kind of inherent about the successful people, that beyond their granted talent, gift, intelligence and hard work there are other factors that contribute to it. Opportunity that plays a huge role. There is being at the right place at the right time and having resources to avail the right opportunities that plays a huge part. I agree with his points on Culture and Tradition in shaping the personality of a person.
* Analysis of the mind, behavior and social behavior facinates me.. So I like this take by the author. Its not necessary complete or accurate or absolute.. But interesting research and findings.
* I also think how they make the best of the situation at any point in life..
* Guruji says- Karma plays a role in several aspects of a person's life
Birth- When, Where, to which parents - Prarabhdha Karma Wealth- Prarabhdha Longivity-Prarabhdha Marriage- Environment.. Not really made in heaven! Education - Environment..
A big question for me : HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? WHOSE DEFINITION IS IT? isn't there an inherent assumption about success it self?
BEING AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME Call it grace, the destiny, or luck..
MATHEW EFFECT:
"Those who have will get more, those with less will lose". I can see this point of view. Success builds on Success.
CULTURE AND BACKGROUND:
Indians/Asians emphasizing educational excellence for their children- Top rated children in top universities and jobs in all fields of Academics
Our thrifty nature- Due to limited resources available - Helps us save and not over spend..
Learn and Adapt to change-
African and their music background and sports-
OPPORTUNITY From Alchemist, it says "if you want something very strongly the Universe conspires to help you fulfill it" I think the opportunities are presented by life..
Although we know this.. society puts these away to a side and gives it less importance..
For eg. parents in India say children with low income, no light or books have come up very well due to hard work and effort only.. but some upper had helps when there is genuine effort and talents.. Like MS Subbalaskhmi..
Is it not Karma, that based on our previous vasana's we are born at the time and place where our desire will be fulfilled in the next life??
AGE:

Interesting Anecdotes/Points to think about:
* The Korean Culture of "Distance in Authority" * Paddy fields culture of Chinese/Asians- Their painstaking thoroughness, Attention to detail, hardworking nature
"Nurtured By Love"by Shinichi Suzuki Suzuki was a visionary who saw the benefits of persistent practice and dedication in mastering the piano and the violin-singleminded and tireless dedication. The book was reqd reading for me when my daughter started suzuki piano. All the extraordinarily successful men and women in Outliers definitely have countless hrs of practice in common Some like the Borgenichts, thru sheer grit and determination claw their way up. While men like Bill Joy and Bill Gates, I think, were lucky enough to pursue their passions under less stressful circumstances. Adirect connection between effort and reward is a wonderful thing isn't it? Especially in business these days, here and in India, only a rare few seem to find that connection. You're indeed blessed if you started your business at a time when competition was scarce with relatively few rules and regs. The chapter on plane crashes was heartbreaking. That even under threat of disaster one can be hampered by cultural legacies is frightening. But such debilitating traits can be overcome shows the adaptability of humans and makes one think in what other ways we can modify our behavior according to certain situations.Very interesting.......
