Chetan Bhagat is a great story teller. He can keep you hooked on to the book till the end.
ReplyDeleteHis plots usually involve the life of youth in India in various demographics- Students, Call Center Employees, young professional adults etc. In each book he takes a deep rooted issue and tries to expose it and brings attention to the implications they have on the characters as felt by them. While fresh and easy approach for addressing worthy causes is laudable, this is a popular fiction genre by all means. In his Bollywood style script and characterization, much of the message loses its punch and power.
Read a couple of books and you get the formula. Excerpts will suffice for rest of the books..
What jolted me with shock is the extent of westernization of the lifestyle of Indian youth. The very issues that the west is trying to fight, like alcoholism, smoking and pre-marital sex in the youth are being embraced in India and is even main steam! Unfortunately this kind of lifestyle is not decried but accepted as normal within the story..
In fact the language itself is very American colloquial English for a completely Indian setting as far back as the early 90’s which does not lend authenticity.
